Seamless Gutters Vs. Sectional Gutters

Above is a photo example of a seamless gutter system we installed on a customers home.

Whether you are a first time homeowner or have owned many properties you may find yourself wondering, are gutters really necessary? The truth is, gutters have many benefits and are indeed a necessity to protect your home though it is often put on the back burner when building houses. Knowing how to manage them and what they are useful for will help you save your home and money in the long run.

There are two main types of gutters on the market today, which will be the focus in this article. The older version of gutters are known as sectional gutters which you may be able to find in the DIY hardware store. Sectional gutters come in separate pieces that are put together with clips and screws. While this option is a cheaper option, they are much less reliable, are more difficult to maintain, and tend to have leaks. Sectional gutters are mostly found on older homes since it was the main system used on homes prior to the introduction of seamless gutters. Sectional gutters still give some some level of protection to property, however, there are newer and better options available.

The newer version of gutters is known as the seamless gutter which gets its name because it is formed using a single piece of metal that runs the entire length of the building. Seamless gutter systems do not use any clips or screws to hold the gutters together, eliminating the possibility of leaks. Other options to further protect your home include leaf guard filters which are placed on top of the seamless gutters to prevent debris from clogging and backing up the gutter system.

Why They Are Important?

You’re probably wondering why it is important to have gutters in the first place. The main purpose of gutters is to prevent damage to your home. Water damage can spread quickly when it hits your homes siding and having a great gutter system will prevent this from happening as it guides water away from your structure. If you do not have a gutter system and your siding was finished with wood or stone then you may potentially develop major problems with water seeping in to your home. Water collects when it rolls down your home and can lead to problems such as dampness, mold, and rot.

Though you may not realize it is happening, gutter systems protect your home all around by redirecting water away from your home through the gutter and down pipe. Over time, rain water collection near your home can cause significant foundation problems if the water is not directed away from your home. Water that collects near your home can harm the foundation of your property due to the soil becoming over saturated and potentially causing your house to shift and move which in turn creates a costly repair.

Properly installed and maintained gutters using leaf filters prevent back flow of water onto your property and the surrounding area. If you have poorly installed gutters or if they they are blocked with scum and debris, back flow can pose a real problem. The last thing you want is the water flowing in the wrong direction instead of being guided through the gutter system. The best way to avoid this is by having your gutters and leaf filters installed and maintained by a professional.
